Considerations for Intervention and Support
Skill Development
Supporting youth with IDD and complex behavioral health needs includes many areas of skill development. This section discusses three areas of consideration that are critical to youth skill development. All team members need to be aware of these areas of consideration to support and facilitate ongoing opportunities to support progress in these areas across all environments. Watch the videos to learn more about each area of consideration. Next, reflect on your knowledge of each area. Select resources that will assist you in learning more about an area of interest and the strategies to support and educate youth in the home, school, and community.

This is a useful resource for anyone unfamiliar with special education and how individualized education programs (IEP) are developed for youth.

- Zone of Proximal Development
This video offers an introduction to The Zone of Proximal Development, a framework to help identify the appropriate goals and the needed supports for youth to gain knowledge and develop skills. This FREE module describes how to approach the development of program supports for youth with autism and related disabilities. The module will introduce the process of comprehensive program planning utilizing the Ziggurat Model, the CAPS, and associated tools.
- Evidence-Based Practices for Children, Youth, and Young Adults with Autism
This report provides information about evidence-based practices (EBP) for teaching and supporting autistic individuals. The report includes an appendix with intervention facts sheets that define the EBP and the outcomes for specific ages and specific outcome areas that can be used by multi-agency teams.

This resource offers evidence-based tips to assist with the development of effective communication materials for people with IDD.
