When body signals are recognized and begin to have connection to an emotion, the action needed for regulation is more likely to be recognized. Strategies that support regulation can help youth to begin to connect their body signals to the needed strategies that help them stay regulated.

Tips for Supporting Regulation

Validate what you believe the person is telling you they are feeling and what they need. Even if you are wrong, voice that you are trying and will continue to try to help them get what they need. Just validating them is demonstrating that you believe that noticing their body and how they are feeling is very important.

Seek to understand what a person is feeling and what makes the person more comfortable and regulated. It may surprise you!

Enhance understanding by using visual supports to communicate about options to support regulation. Pictures can be a connector when stressed and the thinking brain is off-line!

Don't wait for someone to ask for support or to become dysregulated. Provide regulating experiences throughout the day... everyday.
