Similar situations may result in different types of stress for different people. Consider the stress that youth encounter in school.

  • Positive Stress: Some youth may find the expectations of school to be motivating and encouraging.
  • Negative Stress: Other youth may find school expectations difficult and will struggle at times, yet they have the support to move through those difficult times.
  • Toxic Stress: But some youth may find school to be a daily challenge with ongoing failures and few or no supportive relationships in or outside of the school. For these youth, school can be traumatic.
